Aquamarine - March Birthstone History

Why do we love the jewelry we do? Is it merely pleasing to our eye? Or is it something more mysterious?

Many people would attest that certain stones speak to them in ways that others do not.  that stones to have inexplicable influence over our minds and bodies. Our tastes might just be a matter of personal preference, but could there be something else at work?

Over the course of the next few blogs, I’ll explore popular gems and their lore, and perhaps in the meantime provide a little insight and direction for your next shopping trip! Gemstone jewelry could very well be more than just an indulgence.

In honor of those brought into the world during this month, we’ll start with Aquamarine, the modern birthstone for March.

The legend of the birthstone goes back thousands of years, but the more current tradition of wearing natal stones appears to have originated in Poland during the eighteenth century. Birthstones are said to have peculiar virtue for individuals born in its designated month, and this mystical bond between the stone and the wearer has been used for healing and guidance throughout the ages.

Aquamarine has been said to augment bravery, clarity, peace, insight, expression, balance, and readiness. This beautiful pale blue stone gets its name from the Latin words for water and for sea. For the color, or perhaps for its enigmatic properties? Aquamarine has been said to be an antidote for anxiety, much like its namesake.
