In 1998, Azotic Coating Technologies of Minnesota came up with the idea of coating the bottom-side of clear topaz with a fine layer of titanium. The result was a startling rainbow effect of reds, purples, greens and blues that changed color when exposed to different lighting. The designer stone garnered much attention at the 2003 Tucson Gem Show, in fact, so much so that clear topaz became difficult to find. Because topaz is a relatively inexpensive semiprecious gemstone with a durable hardness of 8 on the Mohl’s Scale, it’s perfect for jewelry. Diamond accent stones around the topaz reflect and highlight the prism effect. One problem with Mystic Fire stones, is that scratches in the titanium undercoat can damage the color of the stone.
