Black Diamonds are a truly unique gemstone. In fact, they are so unique that some scientists theorize that they are not actually native to the earth like other clear and colored diamonds, but were transported to the earth from extraterrestrial stellar explosions. Black diamonds, also known as Carbonado, are only found in Brazil and the Central African Republic. Other, conventional diamonds were created when volcanic eruptions ejected them from the depths of the earth. Around the globe, conventional diamonds have been found in mine fields where these eruptions occurred, with the obvious exception of the black diamond. Natural black diamonds are small, round, porous, and rarely appear crystalline; yet the nitrogen content produces a strong, beautiful luminescence. The demand for the rare diamond is high and as a result, man-made versions are now available. Black diamond jewelry is frequently partnered with clear, or white diamonds with an eye-catching result that is often (ahem) “out of this world”.
