The American Cancer Society established its “Relay For Life” as an event to not only  provide funding  for Cancer research, education, advocacy, and patient service programs but also as a celebration of life for survivors, a memorial for loved ones lost, and a rally for community awareness.  In fact, the Relay For Life raises almost 43% of the total funding for the ACS.   New Hanover County, NC’s Relay For Life selected REEDs Jewelers own Rhonna Zimmer as this year’s Honorary Chairperson.  Rhonna, herself a breast Cancer survivor of 20 years, along with her Husband Herbert, a two year Lymphoma survivor, are staunch advocates of the ACS and its task to defeat Cancer.

The Wilmington NC event will take place this weekend and offers fun activities, music, food and guest speakers in addition to the annual walk.   The Opening event is scheduled for Friday evening at 6:30 pm, and kicks off with the Cancer surviors walk, run, or wheelchair first lap.  Family, friends and team members cheer survivors on as they complete this emotional victory lap.   Following the inital lap, teams of participants will take turns walking and running to raise funding for the ACS.   Because Cancer never sleeps, each team is offered a campsite to create a theme and decorate for an overnight “best camp” contest.  The event concludes around 1 pm Saturday when ALL participants and Cancer survivors are invited to take a final turn around the track to finish together, everyone as a winner.
