The blue sapphire is one of my favorite gemstones even though it is not my personal birthstone.  I just love the beauty of the blue and purple hues that are typically found in a blue sapphire.  The sapphire is a gemstone that is one of the variety of the mineral corundum.  There are 3 main components to the sapphire gemstone - hue, saturation and tone.  The hue is the color of the sapphire, where the saturation is the brightness of the hue color.  The tone of the gemstone is how lightness to darkness of the hue.  Blue is the primary hue in the blue sapphire and the secondary hues are purple, violet and green.  The violet and purple hues add to the overall beauty of the color of the sapphire, which in turn make the stone more valuable.  Whereas, the more green hues can be more of a negative and may lower the quality of the sapphire.

Sapphires look great in any jewelry setting.  Sapphire rings are very common for both women and mens jewelry.  Blue sapphires are also popular as accents in diamond engagement rings or wedding bands.  If someone is planning on getting married, a sapphire pendant would make a great “something blue” for the bride to wear at her wedding.

The sapphire is also the birthstone of September. Although the blue sapphire is the most common of the  sapphires, they do come in other colors such as pink, yellow, green and other colors.  These other colors are known as fancy color sapphires.  The sapphire is also the most common gemstone next to the diamond.
