We’re all happy to celebrate it, but I’ve never actually taken the time to look up the meaning behind the Labor Day holiday. After a little research, I discovered that the holiday was first celebrated in New York in 1882. The creator of the holiday is debated, and argued to be either Peter McGuire or Matthew Maquire, each a member of a Labor Union. The Department of Labor states the reason behind the holiday is to honor “the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.”

I think its a nice idea to select jewelry that honors specific professions on Labor Day. Charms are fashioned in shapes representative of a multitude of occupations. Stylized scissors, brushes, combs and hair dryers represent Hair Stylists. Hats, dalmatians, and fire hydrants are indicative of firefighters. Hammers, ladders and hardhats symbolize construction workers. Gold or silver charms may be worn singularly as necklace pendents or matched with others in charm bracelets. Whatever your profession, charms can be found to illustrate and honor it on this important holiday.
