Sterling Silver Opal and Diamond Pendant

Sterling Silver Opal and Diamond Pendant

The opal is a mineraloid, (a mineral like substance), that is set at a relatively low temperature and can possibly be found with just about any rock.  Some of the most common rocks that opals are found with are limonite and sandstone.  The actual word “opal” comes from the Latin term opalus by Greek opallios.  The opal ranges from many colors: white, grey, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, magenta, rose, pink, slate, olive, brown and black.  Of the hues found in opals the reds against the black are considered to be the most rare.  The most common opal hues are the white and greens.  Opal is October’s birthstone.

Opal is the national gemstone of Australia and where 97% of the world’s opals are produced.  In the middle ages opals were considered to be a stone that brought good luck.  They were considered good luck because the opal possesses all the virtues of each gemstone and each are found in the opal color spectrum.

Opal jewelry is classy and sophisticated.  Because opals have many hues they can be set with almost any color gemstone and look beautiful!  If set with pink sapphires the pink shines through the opal and if set with blue topaz or sapphire the blue shines through and so on with other colored gemstones.  The opal also is fabulous by itself or set with diamond accents.
