One particularly noticeable kind of symbolic jewelry are pieces formed in the Fleur-de-Lis shape.    A stylized flower, the fleur-de-lis is argued to be either a lily or an iris, but originated as a standard of the French royalty with each of the three petals representing the three divisions of feudal society: workers, warriors, and the clergy.  Powerful French kings, including Clovis, Charlemagne, and several Louis’ used the symbol; first, to signify the divine right of the monarchy, then to denote chivalry and heraldry.  However, it was when a 19 year old Joan of Arc , after a vision from God,  led the French Army to save then King Charles VII and France from invasion by the English, that the fleur-de-lis became the emblem of endurance and overcoming hardship through courage, faith, and determination.  Joan did not carry a weapon in battle, only a banner decorated by the fleur-de-lis.   In modern times, the Fleur-de-lis is not seen as symbol of the power of monarchs, although it is frequently used in the flags and shields of cities with a French heritage.   Notable, the City of New Orleans used the symbol to represent their perseverance after Hurricane Katrina.  The fleur-de-lis can be found in a wide array of jewelry and can represent anything from faith, to courage, to endurance, to nobility, to simple artistic preferences.
