Rhodolite is a semi-precious gemstone that looks a lot like a ruby.  From a mineralogist’s standpoint, it’s a mix of almandite and pyrope and is classed as part of the garnet group of minerals.  To a gemologist, rhodolite has a beautiful, intense color, a good hardness of 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs Scale, is almost always transparent and free of inclusions, and never has to be artificially enhanced.  Although Rhodolite can be found in several places around the world, the Cowee Valley in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains is probably the best known source.  Rhodolite gemstone jewelry is very vivid and noticable and makes a wonderful alternative to much more pricey ruby jewelry.  Rhodolite has become increasingly popular with high end jewelry designers such as Le Vian because of its clarity, rich color, and hardiness.
