Gold Double Chain Heart Anklet

Gold Double Chain Heart Anklet

The anklet, a type of bracelet worn around the ankle, has been worn by women for centuries.    The concept is believed to have evolved in the Middle East from the ancient custom of chaining a woman’s feet together so that she was forced to walk with small, mincing steps behind her husband to show her subservience and to keep her from running away.   However,  the anklet meant different things to different cultures.  Most saw the type of jewelry simply as a decorative accent.   In early India, women attached bells to the anklet so that a pleasing tingling sound accompanied the woman’s movement.  Belly Dancers were (and are) known for using anklets with bells to enhance their allure.  Today anklets are commonly worn in western society as a part of summertime jewelry to accent bare, tanned legs and minimalistic seasonal clothing.  Modern anklets are generally composed of thin silver or gold chain-links, leather, and plastics.  Selections can be found with small lightweight ornaments attached.  When purchasing an anklet, it’s a good idea to try it on prior to purchase to ensure that the jewelry does not impede movement.
