Tourmaline is a semi-precious gemstone composed of boron silicate and is often compounded with a secondary element (such as iron, lithium, copper or magnesium) which greatly effects the color of the gemstone. Most tourmaline is black; in fact, almost 95% of the gemstones found are black or near black.  However, it’s the unusual colors found in the other 5% that make tourmaline so interesting.  Varieties of tourmaline are found about the globe but the unique blending of the gemstone with that secondary element causes some rare, region specific specimens to be highly exceptional.  My favorites are “Watermelon Tourmaline” where the crystal is pink on one end and green on the other and neon blue Paraiba tourmaline which appears to glow.  Both of these varieties are mined in Brazil.  As you can imagine, both of these varieties make very interesting gemstone jewelry.  Tourmaline has a nice hardness rating of 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale so it has a durability suitable for frequently worn jewelry.
