Okay. I admit it. I am the ultimate History nerd. I love antiques, antiquities, relics, you name it, if something is old, I’ll probably be intrigued by it. I especially covet antique jewelry, such as agate or onyx cameos, Jet mourning jewelry, and colorful Egyptian scarabs. Antiques are a visceral connection with our ancestors and the craftsmen or artisans of their time. Wearing antique jewelry provides us with a feeling of sentimental nostalgia. However, antique jewelry can not only be difficult to find, it can also be extremely expensive. A wonderful substitute for antique pieces is replica jewelry, or jewelry crafted in the style and manner of vintage pieces. Modern designers and jewelers often carry lines that recreate historically popular styles of jewelry. Generally, these reproductions have a very real advantage over their antique equivalents: modern pieces use modern technology. Reproductions usually have better designed clasps, metal alloys are generally less resistant to scratching and tarnishing, and there are often warranties attached that don’t come with antiques. Remember, vintage doesn’t have to be old. It just has to look like it is.
