Opal is the birthstone of October and the national gemstone of Australia. Australia produces 97% of the world’s supply of opal gemstones. Opals range in many shades of color from clear white, gray, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, magenta, rose, pink, slate, olive, brown and black. The most rare opal gemstones are those of reds against black and the most common are the white and greens colored opals. They can vary from opaque to semi-transparent. During the Middle Ages, the opal gemstone was known to bring good luck. It was thought to bring good luck because it was believed to possess all the virtues of each gemstone color represented in the color spectrum of the opal.
Since opals have so many color shades they blend very well with other gemstones. I love how the pink sapphires bring out the shades of pink in this opal cross pendant. Another favorite is the black onyx and opal combination. You can see how much the blues pop when bordered by the black onyx in the ring. Opals are very versatile and look fabulous with any other gemstone combination or stand alone jewelry.
