Chalcedony is a gemstone composed of silica with minute crystals of quartz and Moganite. It comes in a huge array of colors, is generally translucent or milky in appearance, and is found worldwide. Varieties of chalcedony are identified and named according to their color. Notable examples include agate, bloodstone, onyx, carnelian, jasper, and tiger’s eye. The term “chalcedony” when it is applied to a specific gem, implies the light blue variety which is quite lovely. Blue Chalcedony is not very common in gemstone jewelry in spite of its appealingly gentle hue and its general availability. The gem rates a 6 to 7 on the Mohs Scale which puts it at a moderate hardiness. When worn in jewelry, the gemstone is said to improve vitality and health, promote generosity, and alleviate sadness or bad dreams.
