Beads signify Mardi Gras. Float Krewes have been tossing inexpensive glass and plastic beads to enthusiastic revelers along the New Orleans parade route for generations. From drunken frat brothers to matronly grandmothers, large crowds of adoring fans line the street for the opportunity to shove others aside in order to grab one of the coveted, gaudy trinkets. The monetary value of the jewelry is negligible, but not it’s sentimental value. Mardi Gras celebrants want the beads, originally intended to represent justice, faith, and power, simply because they represent the city, the event, and loads of fun. After the big parade and bar binges are over though, some may want to remember the city with a memento that has a little more longevity. A wonderful idea is Fleur-de-Lis jewelry. The Fleur-de-Lis has long symbolized the city, from it’s origin signifying the French heritage of the city, to it’s more modern prominent placement on state and city flags and on the uniforms of the beloved Saints football team. The Fleur-de-Lis, after the devastation from Katrina, became the emblem of the city’s recovery and is seen throughout the hardest hit sections as they have been slowly rebuilt. Fleur-de-Lis jewelry is the perfect Mardi Gras reminder, not only of the event, but of the city itself.
