Aquamarine is the birthstone for March and it’s name originates from the Latin words “water and sea”.  It ranges in color from a light sky blue to a deep blue sea color.  In order to enhance the color of an aquamarine it is often heated to high temperatures. Aquamarine is related to the emerald gemstone which both are part of the beryl family.

The hardness of aquamarine ranks between a 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale (where a diamond would rank at a 10).    Due to it’s hardness, aquamarine is a durable quality stone.  The most valuable aquamarines come from Brazil, with one popular vivid blue aquamarine known as the Santa Maria, from the country’s Santa Maria de Itabira. They can also be found in Africa, Middle East, Mexico and the United States.  Aquamarines are known to bring you luck.  Sailors used to carry aquamarine stones to keep them safe at sea.

Aquamarine jewelry can be found in many style varieties in pendants, rings, earrings and bracelets.  They are often combined with diamond accents to enhance the beauty of the stone.  Aquamarine is also an affordable quality gemstone which makes it a must have for any jewelry collection!
