August’s alternative birthstone is Jade.   Coveted by the Chinese for thousands of years, jade has a rich history as a gemstone.  In prehistoric times, jade was used as a primary component  of weapons and tools because of its hardness and durability.  Around 3000 B.C., the Chinese began using jade in jewelry, carved figurines, and grave goods for their royal families.  To them, Jade’s value was higher than that of gold or diamonds.   The ancient Egyptians, Mayans, Aztecs, New Zea land’s Maori and early Europeans also utilized Jade as a precious material.

Interestingly enough, the value of jade today depends on geography.  In Asia, antique jade depicting religious or cultural beliefs is highly prized.   Many Europeans, on the other hand, collect jade formed for a specific use such as snuff boxes, cigarette holders, rings or small bowls.

As a general rule, jade is valued by its color, clarity, transparency and texture although different regions have different preferences.  People in the U.S. or in Europe prefer jade that is emerald green, apple green or spinach green.  Asians desire pure white, pink or yellow jade.  Lavender jade is becoming very popular worldwide.   Overall, emerald green, also known as imperial jade, has the highest value.  Contrary to what is common with other gemstones, streaks of other colors running through the stone is not always considered a flaw.  Depending on the pattern, these streaks may actually increase the gemstone’s value.   Regardless, jade gemstones or carvings create beautiful and unique pieces of jewelry.
