We’re all happy to celebrate it, but I’ve never actually taken the time to look up the meaning behind the Labor Day holiday. After a little research, I discovered that the holiday was first celebrated in New York in 1882. The creator of the holiday is debated, and argued to be either Peter McGuire or Matthew Maquire, each a member of a Labor Union. The Department of Labor states the reason behind the holiday is to honor “the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.”

I think its a nice idea to select jewelry that honors specific professions on Labor Day. Charms are fashioned in shapes representative of a multitude of occupations. Stylized scissors, brushes, combs and hair dryers represent Hair Stylists. Hats, dalmatians, and fire hydrants are indicative of firefighters. Scott Kay is no fan of tungsten carbide wedding bands for men.  To Kay, the concept that wedding bands manufactured of this material are indestructible is a misnomer.   In a YouTube video, Kay denounces the use of the metal alloy in wedding bands for two significant reasons.  First, the alloy may contain small voids which can lead to cracks or breaking when jewelry is dropped.  Once broken, a ring cannot be fixed and must be completely replaced.  Secondly, tungsten carbide jewelry cannot be altered.  Meaning?  If the groom gains weight, the ring cannot be adjusted; it must be replaced.  Kay argues that tungsten carbide is fine for fashion jewelry that is worn occasionally, but not for a wedding band that is meant to be worn daily for a lifetime.

Scott Kay has introduced his SK Cobalt line as an alternative to tungsten carbide wedding bands.  Formed from BioBlu27, this alloy consists primarily of cobalt and chromium.  The resulting alloy is four times harder than platinum, durable, scratch-resistant, solid, and unbreakable.  It’s corrosion resistant, doesn’t tarnish, has a polishable, mirror-like shine and is naturally white.   The material is so hypoallergenic, it’s used in medial devices for joint replacement. Alexandrite was first discovered in April 1834 in Russia’s Ural Mountains.  Ironically, enough, the discovery coincided with the coming of age of Czar Alexander II, and the stone possessed the amazing ability to morph from green to red, the two colors that represented Imperial Russia.  The Russian elite took this as a sign, and proclaimed Alexandrite as the national stone of tsarist Russia.

Today, it turns out, the stone is still amazingly rare as it requires the unlikely blending of beryllium and chromium, two components that Mother Nature usually prefers to place in completely different rock types.  For many decades, the only source of Alexandrite was the Russian Urals, but in 1987 a nice source was discovered in Brazil.  Other, less fine quality stones have been found in Asia and Africa.  Fine samples from Russia are some of the most expensive gemstones in the world.

Alexandrite jewelry, as a result of this extreme rarity, is generally created rather than naturally occurring.  Created Alexandrite rings, earrings and necklaces have the unique ability to change from blueish-green in daylight to purplish-red in artificial light.  This unique ability makes the stone appear to be magical and is said to bring the wearer the ability to “think fast” in times of stress.  Alexandrite jewelry makes a great conversation piece and is a gorgeous adornment to any outfit.

On July 28, the Game Show Network (GSN) and Reeds Jewelers proclaimed Cindy Clark of Hurst, Texas, the winner of their “Rings and Romance Sweepstakes”. In one of those “aah” moments, Cindy told the GSN audience that she and her husband Gary were newlyweds of eight months, and although she’d received a wedding band, she’d never gotten an engagement ring. As a parent of a teenager, I’m well aware that plastic or rubber bracelets are “in”.  Every kid I see seems to be wearing either inexpensive wristbands stamped with a trendy saying or word or the increasingly popular packets of Silly bands in assorted shapes and colors.  I can understand the phenomena, these wristbands are very affordable and easily replaceable.  A parent doesn’t worry about bands being lost, broken or given away at will.  Huge variances in color, style and shape allow for a lot of individuality.

The problem with this type of jewelry is similar to that faced by commodities in general.  When “everyone” has “it”, “it” becomes common and in turn, less desirable.  Teenagers might seem to be following the crowd in fashion and style, but they also want their style to be unique and noteworthy.  From personal experience, fashion that my teen “had to have” suddenly becomes passe once “everyone” has it.  So, my thoughts in regards to this jewelry phenomena are: know it’s temporary, by selecting jewelry for school that’s unique to start with, a kid is already one up on her classmates in school fashion.  To me, jewelry is supposed to be different, why choose jewelry that is the same as everyone else’s?
