Jewelry Designer Spotlight: Le Vian
Le Vian is not your everyday jewelry company: it’s a legend where the storied magnificence makes it difficult to separate myth from reality. The 108.93 carat Kooh-i-Nur at the centerpiece of Queen Elizabeth’s crown; the fabled, 182 carat Daria -I Noor, aka the Sea of Light, guarded by gold lions with ruby eyes and lost in Iran; and the Peacock Throne, the shining creation encrusted with over 26000 precious stones created for Shah Jahan of the Taj Mahal…. all of those fantasy pieces that seem more fairy tale than the reality they are, were entangled at some point with the LeVian family of Persia. For over five centuries the LeVian name has been synonymous with jewelry perfection. The family quest for creating perfection is exemplified by a search for matched gemstones to create a single necklace that commenced in 1880, and did not result in a finished product until 1960.
Ephraim LeVian emigrated to the U.S from Persia (today, Iran) in the 1950’s and brought the family secrets with him, including the art of the “invisible setting”. Today, the Le Vian tradition of crafting masterpieces continues with Ephriam’s five children. The modern Le Vian family still selects only the finest gemstones and creates museum quality masterpieces for royalty, movie stars, and billionaires; but, since 1978, the family has begun to design treasures affordable to the middle class. So, if you want an heirloom to pass down, now’s your change to own a piece of a legend.
