As the saying goes, what’s old is new again.    Rose gold, also known as pink or red gold, is a gold alloy which blends gold with copper, creating a warm gold with a pink or rose hue.   The higher the copper content of the alloy, the brighter the red hue is in the finished metal.  Most commonly, the alloy is 75% gold and 25% copper although frequently a trace of silver is also added.    One small perk or negative, depending on how you look at it, is that due to the tarnishing trait of copper, the red/pink tint of the colored gold may actually darken over time.

Although the concept of rose gold sounds recent, the Russians started using the alloy in jewelry in the early 19th century and it became extremely popular in the Victorian Age both due to the warmth of the color and because copper was much less expensive as an alloy than silver.   The metal remained a hot jewelry commodity until the early 1900’s when, as is the case of many jewelry trends, it suddenly became passe.  It’s popularity rapidly declined and Rose gold pieces were even considered to be “tawdry”.  Recently, rose gold has seen a resurgence to its former glory as jewelry lovers began to covet and seek out antique pieces.  Jewelers noticed the trend, and have began to create modern renditions of rose gold jewelry.  The warmth of the metal’s hue is sure to create a popular jewelry trend for the future.
