Alternative Birthstone for July: Carnelian
July’s primary birthstone is the ruby, one of the most beautiful, vivid gemstones in existence, but also one of the most expensive. A less-pricy, attractive alternative July birthstone is the Carnelian, also known as Cornelian or Sard. Carnelian is a translucent mineral that ranges in shade from light orange to deep red. Sard is the name given to the deeper red hue. The semi-precious gemstone has quite a storied history even though it’s not one of the more commonly known gems today. Carnelian was used by the Romans as the jewel of choice for signet rings, which were used to emboss important documents. Apparently, hot wax doesn’t adhere to the gemstone. The Egyptians and Phoenicians utilized the carnelian in sacred scarabs. Carnelian decorative art and jewelry were also popular with the Minoans, early Greeks, and the Etruscans. Wearing Carnelian is said to bring the wearer energy and inner strength. It also protects from bad vibes, guards against poverty, and enhances sense of humor. (We should all start wearing carnelian jewelry!) The gem has a moderate hardness rating of 6 to 7 on the Mohs Scale and is an excellent choice for interesting, unique jewelry.
