Symbolic Jewelry: Peace
September 21st is the International Day of Peace, or World Peace Day. The holiday was created by the United Nations in 1981 as a day to celebrate the absence of war. To commemorate the event, a “Peace Bell” was cast from coins donated by children around the world and gifted to the U.N.’s New York headquarters by Japan to remind us of the lives lost to war. The bell is inscribed with its wish, “Long live absolute world peace”. I find it highly ironic that exactly 20 years and 10 days after the first bell was rung, 9/11 occurred in the same city, the ultimate act repudiating the meaning of the international holiday. Wearing peace jewelry on September 21 helps remind is of our goal for international peace. Jewelry styled as doves, the peace symbol, and the word “peace” are all wonderful ways to share our hopes and dreams of worldwide harmony and reconciliation.

Nature is well represented in jewelry. An abundance of flowers, birds, animals, and insects can all be found stylized, etched, embossed, and engraved in rings, bracelets, pendants and charms. One of the most popular creatures represented in jewelry is the dragonfly. The reason why is that dragonflies are intriguing and ...continue

When most of us see Palm Tree jewelry, we're reminded of tropical paradises with warm breezes, sandy beaches, blue skies, and coconuts. Many of us don't know of the symbolism behind the tree. In fact, the palm has historically been a symbol of many things to several diverse cultures and ...continue

Similar to Christmas, Easter jewelry can be broken down into two basic categories: religious or secular holiday themed. In other words, symbolic Easter jewelry ranges from stylized rabbits, pastel colors, and Easter eggs to crosses and crucifixes. By no means is this an "either/ or" choice. Many people have both ...continue

Signs of Spring are beginning to pop to life. When Daffodils, tulips and hyacinths start to appear on lawns across the country, they bring cheer with them. The brilliantly colored petals, the bright green stems and leaves, and the lovely fragrance rescue us from winter's drudgery. Sometimes, we can prod ...continue

Tired of wearing flag pins on President's Day? True, the flag is probably the most patriotic symbol there is and wearing a pin or other piece of jewelry depicting the flag expresses loyalty and pride in our nation. Every president and presidential candidate wears such a pin on his jacket ...continue

As Martin Luther King Day approaches, we think about the "harmony of man" that Mr. King dreamed and preached about. To me, "harmony of man" is exemplified by the word, "Peace". The 60's was an era defined by the Civil Rights movement, anti-war protests, nuclear disarmament and the Peace Sign ...continue

One particularly noticeable kind of symbolic jewelry are pieces formed in the Fleur-de-Lis shape. A stylized flower, the fleur-de-lis is argued to be either a lily or an iris, but originated as a standard of the French royalty with each of the three petals representing the three divisions of feudal ...continue

The Jewish faith does not believe that God should be represented in any form, including stylized symbols seen in jewelry. However, there are symbols that are universally accepted and proudly displayed by Jews around the world. One such motif is the highly recognizable Star of David, a six pointed star ...continue

I personally like symbolic jewelry. There are many designer rings, earrings, pendants, and charms that are engraved, embossed, or shaped as symbols associated with good luck. Shamrocks or four-leaf clovers, horseshoes, pennies, ladybugs and rabbits feet are all easily recognizable and popular symbols found in jewelry. Less known symbols that ...continue

With the freezing temperatures and bland white of Winter, wearing jewelry that symbolizes the return of Spring's warmth and vivid color can be uplifting. Symbolism is very popular in today's jewelry and selecting pieces that represent things that make you happy is a wonderful idea. Engraved, etched, stylized and cut ...continue
